I read a quote that said, “Silly girl,” the old lady smiled, “your different was your “beautiful” all along - Atticus

I'm Joni Marie and I am perfectly different.

I love that!

My Medium

Art has threaded through my life in many mediums — inks, pastels, watercolors, acrylics, jewelry, and fiber work — each one a different way of seeing. I’m still reaching toward oils, a medium I hope to explore in the seasons ahead.

My Working Garden

Welcome to my world of mixed‑media portraiture, where charcoal, watercolor, and natural textures come together to celebrate the quiet strength inside every face. Rooted in the Blue Ridge Mountains, my work blends expressive mark‑making with wild blooms, soft petals, and found elements from nature. These floral crowns — my “Crowned in Nature” signature — honor identity, belonging, and the gentle ways the natural world shapes who we are.

I’m drawn to portraits because they offer a moment of rest, a place to feel seen, and a reminder of our shared humanity. In my studio and classes, I work with any media that helps tell the story: charcoal, watercolor, collage papers, botanical elements, and unexpected textures gathered from the world around us. Teaching is woven into my practice, guiding students to discover intuitive layering, personal symbolism, and the beauty found in slowing down.

Whether you’re here to explore my artwork or to learn alongside me, I hope you find softness, connection, and inspiration in the details.

Born in Quonset Point, Rhode Island. I grew up in a military family, we were citizens of the world, living in nearly every state (but 7) and abroad from Italy to Japan.
